Carpet, Tile or Hardwood – What’s right for you?
Whether you are getting your home ready to sell or considering what you want in your next home, new flooring is something that many people like, whether in the home they are living in or the one they are planning to buy. Flooring can be an important part of selling your home because buyers will be turned off by dirty, old stained carpet or scratched up wood flooring and will subtract an amount from the price they will offer, even if it isn’t the right amount for replacement.
Many people are opting for tile and wood floors when it comes time to replace flooring because maintenance is easier and allergies are easier to control. Many sellers might think about installing new carpet when they are getting their home ready to sell, but tile and hardwood floors have a wider appeal, at least right now. The other thing about carpet is that color is a thing that can always be controversial. With new carpet in the wrong color, it can detract from the sale-ability to some buyers where natural wood flooring and neutral stone tile would be a feature that many buyers are looking for.
In the hierarchy of flooring, carpet is the least expensive and then comes wood flooring and finally, tile. When you consider that wood flooring costs twice as much as carpet, and tile costs twice as much as wood flooring, it is easy to see that flooring can become a larger investment than many sellers or buyers are prepared to make.
If you are a buyer looking at a home that has flooring that needs to be replaced, it is important to consider what you can live with until you get exactly what you want, especially if a seller just installed new flooring. Chances are they won’t be as willing to negotiate on personal whims.
When it comes to maintenance, it directly correlates with the cost scale. You have to spend more time, effort and money to keep carpet fresh, clean and protected from stains and wear, but wood flooring and tile can be easier to maintain. When you consider that wood flooring can get scratched by indoor pets, then tile is the most durable choice.
There are still some buyers that prefer carpet because they feel it makes the room warmer, both physically and aesthetically. You can overcome this obstacle by getting area rugs for wood flooring and tile flooring, which gives a room a homier feel. Large room-size area rugs are good for living rooms and can also protect the floor. They have so many choices ranging from the most popular natural materials, Oriental and India rugs or just a solid color rug that compliments the colors in the room.
When you consider that some carpet can be as expensive as cheaper wood floors, there might not be a lot of price difference, when you consider the cost of maintaining the floor and whether you have somebody with allergies in the household. Carpet is harder to keep clean and allergy-free, as opposed to wood or tile flooring, but flooring will always be a matter of personal choice. If you are selling your home, just make sure the floor you have is in good shape, for the quickest sale.
